Open meeting on 1 March 2016 — 9 March 2016

Open meeting on 1 March 2016

The last open meeting of our current series was held on Tuesday 1st March at the Mersea Museum.

The Society has been keen to support two recently formed, very successful local clubs, by donating a trophy to each for awarding at a race or competition. The meeting therefore started with a short ceremony during which the trophies were presented to each club by the Society chairman, Sarah Shehadeh.

Martin Cartwright, chairman of the cycling club, Velo Club Oyster was presented with a continental silver circular dish – the shape being the connection to wheels.

A model oared rowing boat was presented to Donna Frost  and Wendy Whittaker on behalf of the Mersea Rowing Club.

All recipients expressed their thanks for the support  shown.

The meeting continued with a very interesting and humorous talk by Mark Paramor on the Fire Service, which included a potted history from its origins. Fire fighting is in the Paramor blood and Mark is the third generation of fire fighters. His father was based at Portsmouth and was in charge of a team, called out to deal successfully with a fire on HMS Victory. This could potentially have been a national tragedy.

A vote of thanks was given by the secretary, David Gibbons.
